Even with Jessica Hyde, interpretations are about the morality of her actions, not her. Still, Utopia knows when to step back and leave some things unknown-nobody is put under a microscope. To varying degrees, each character falls into the trope of the poorly adjusted adult or the mysterious one with a dark past. Utopia amplifies this trope by fleshing out many of its characters, further strengthening the plot. Many thrillers fixate on a single character who has undergone trauma of some kind-they had a lonely childhood, or skeletons in their closet, or they simply neglect their mental health. Her selfish worldview reflects the show’s cynical outlook on humanity. Trying to understand why she makes the decisions she does is a puzzle in and of itself. Her questionable choices always boil down to her own survival. The most central character of Utopia is Jessica Hyde (Sasha Lane), a not-quite-hero with complex motivations. Utopia is grim, especially with regard to its characters. Ashleigh LaThrop of The Handmaid’s Tale also appears. Michael Stearns, while John Cusack plays his villainous counterpart, Dr. This version features familiar names-Rainn Wilson plays epidemiologist Dr. The eight-episode television series is set amid a rising pandemic that affects children (what a coincidence, right?). With that knowledge comes the responsibility to save the world. Even though they try to fight it, the friends are eventually forced to come to grips with the fact that their theories might be true. When an original copy of the sequel, named Utopia, turns up, the group of young adult friends follow it to a Chicago comic convention. The gang connects over the internet, where they share their conspiracy theories that the fictional novels foreshadow reality. It follows a group of friends bonded together by a graphic novel series. The Amazon Original is adapted from the British show of the same name that aired from 2013 to 2014. Expect the unexpected with Utopia-the plot twists and distorts seemingly harmless comic-obsessed fanboys into serious threats to humanity. ![]() The show is the furthest thing from utopic, but its title is well-suited for the satirical, vice-filled thriller. If any shadowy elites have a plan to get us there, this is your moment.Utopia, a new series from Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn, hit Amazon Prime on Friday. We wouldn’t have to be living in a perfect society for Utopia to play the way it’s supposed to, but we’d need to build something better than this. If the country ever gets to the other side of this pandemic, there may come a time when Utopia can be appreciated for what it is: an inferior American copy of a pretty good British TV show. There’s nothing wrong with extending that invitation, but it’s better to do it intentionally, not as an accident of history. Every time the Utopia kids uncover another piece of the conspiracy, it’s a new invitation to contemplate just how screwed we are. Make whatever art you like-the audience isn’t your problem! But if you’ve made something about a scrappy group of kids uncovering a giant conspiracy, and it turns out that in the time since you finished shooting, that exact conspiracy theory has suddenly revealed itself to be a) believed by a significant portion of the population and b) deadly, it might not be a bad idea to push the release date.Įven if everyone who sees Utopia is capable of distinguishing fact from fantasy-and that’s vanishingly unlikely in a nation that is sending QAnon followers to Congress-it’s impossible to enjoy a story where the heroes persuade themselves that shadowy forces have manufactured a phony pandemic to trick people into taking a dangerous vaccine when those exact beliefs are helping to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans. It’s not the filmmakers’ fault we’re in this mess, it’s not their fault so much of the public is superstitious and gullible, and it won’t be their fault if Utopia gives some dumbass the confidence they need to quit wearing a mask and infect and kill you or the people you care about. We are in the middle of an actual pandemic, a staggering number of Americans sincerely believe that that pandemic is a politically motivated hoax, and an equally staggering number believed vaccines were harmful years before COVID-19 emerged. You can probably see the problem here, and it’s an insurmountable one. While almost everyone else in Toronto was tearing down historical buildings and throwing up mega-developments, Burt was coming up with practical ways of revitalizing dying downtown neighbourhoods, without resorting to the bulldozer. A modernist house she built in the hills above Guelph occupies the book’s front cover. But unlike most of her predecessors, she’s managed to make the actual design and creation of buildings the centre of her work life. ![]() She ran an antique shop in the 1960s and taught at the Ontario College of Art from the ’60s to the ’80s. She has never relied on anyone else to support her or funnel work to her, though she, too, has had to improvise. Many of the women who followed Hill were consigned to teaching or interior design positions if they married well, female graduates could use their training to design the family cottage, or, if they found someone congenial while studying at the faculty, they could marry him and work alongside him in the practice.īurt is among the first of those documented in For the Record to open the profession’s door herself, then walk through and keep on going unaided. Although she did cobble together some architectural or quasi-architectural work over time – adding to a motel or sitting on a town planning board – her career was far from brilliant. She made ends meet through the Great Depression by teaching weaving and glove-making. A new book, For the Record: the First Women in Canadian Architecture (Dundurn Press), documents the travails and triumphs of female graduates of U of T architecture from Hill’s era, the 1920s, to Burt’s, the 1950s, and demonstrates just how long it has taken women with the academic credentials to rise through the profession’s ranks.įanfare greeted Hill’s graduation as the first “girl architect” in Canadian history (that’s what the papers called her), but, unable to find architectural work after she completed the degree, she initially earned her living teaching in a rural school and advising Eaton’s clients how to decorate their homes. “There were six women when I started in the program, and I was the only one to finish,” she says matter-of-factly. Burt was the only woman to graduate from the University of Toronto’s architecture school in 1956, and just the 21st woman to make it through the program since the first one, Esther Marjorie Hill, did it in 1920. It’s the present and the future that I really care about.”īut the past has its uses, too, and the story of Burt’s progress in the architecture profession highlights both changing views about the preservation of historical buildings and the growing clout of women in a traditionally male-dominated field. “You know, I’m not much of a one for trips down memory lane. “I’d never thought of doing anything about it,” she says over brunch, with one of the breezy laughs that frequently punctuate her conversation. It’s typical of Burt that she is not celebrating her half-century in the business. “I can’t tell what age Joan is,” says a client, for whom Burt is building a large estate home and guest house on the Niagara Escarpment. ![]() You’d think that she would be winding things down at this stage of her career, but the 77-year-old agrees to meet on a Sunday because the week is packed with deadline-driven, paying work. ![]() In May, Burt marked 50 years of operating her own firm, Joan Burt Architects. But her impact on this city has been major. There are no bank towers with her name on them nor does she have any libraries or art galleries to her credit. She’s always operated on the fringes of the architecture profession. She’s probably the single greatest friend the Victorian row home has had in this city, saving many of them from demolition in the period when they were most threatened – the 1960s and 1970s – then renovating and modernizing them, making them better places to live. One of the problems with console-based strategy games is that they’re, well, confined to a console. Like all turn-based strategy games, you’re in charge of commanding your units throughout these battles to safety-but unlike other games, if you lose a unit, they’re gone for good (unless, of course, you reset the game and resume from your last save point). Radiant Dawn features lots of characters, plenty of hidden items, all the usual complexity in terms of stat growth and whatnot… it’s a big game, too, with several dozen battles, most of which I never had the chance to see before having to write my review. On the other hand, Fire Emblem traditionalists will be happy to hear that nothing much has changed in the way of the classic formula, either. Overall, there’s almost no evolution to be seen in terms of presentation, and that’s a shame. ![]() At least the soundtrack is instrumentally fantastic (the Fire Emblem games are known for featuring some of the best MIDI around), but the pieces aren’t as inspiring and memorable as the good old Game Boy games. Thankfully, there are a handful of full-motion videos, complete with great voice acting, speckled throughout the campaign to spice up the experience… but it’s quite a downer coming off of one of those dramatic, well-done FMV sequences and diving straight into the still-frame read-it-yourself dialogue cut scenes.īattle animations are particularly dull, as well, and chances are you will have located the option to switch them off by the time you begin your second battle. Boring, right? Yeah, it honestly could have been done better-and I’m not usually one to complain about a lack of voice acting, either. Excellently drawn cardboard cut-outs, but entirely static nonetheless. Radiant Dawn even returns to the same old dialogue scenes in between each battle, which feature cardboard cut-outs of each character accompanied with scrolling text. That isn’t always a bad thing, but admittedly the general lack of voice acting and full-motion cut scenes does detract significantly from the experience. Radiant Dawn might be a brand-new game, but if it weren’t for the funky new controller and widescreen presentation, you’d almost think you were playing the GameCube title. It’s tough even on the easiest difficulty setting! This game is not just a challenge-it’s a torturous romp through turn-based hell. You hardcore strategists might be thinking “What’s wrong with that? Games these days are way too easy, so I appreciate a challenge every once in a while.” But then you would be misunderstanding. With a relentlessly punishing difficulty level and unfathomably steep learning curve even on the easiest setting, Radiant Dawn provides a level of punishment that even Castlevania III and Super Monkey Ball would fear. That’s because Radiant Dawn is one of the most maniacally challenging strategy games ever created. Sure, you should have very little trouble picking up on the plot even if you missed the GameCube Path of Radiance, but this game is no place to start on the series. Wait… what did I just say? Wow, actually, that’s completely untrue. You will meet up with familiar faces along the way (if you played the GameCube game), but it’s okay if this is your first console Fire Emblem, too. ![]() It’s an interesting (if not thoroughly confusing) approach to be certain the game is essentially divided into four parts, all of which feature different lead characters and new armies. That’s because instead of providing a continuation of Path of Radiance’s storyline, Radiant Dawn simply tells the story from another perspective-that of a good-hearted, rebel faction within the enemy ranks. This is a list of classes from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.If you missed the Fire Emblem game for the GameCube ( Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance), you’ll be happy to hear that while this new console-based entry in the series, similarly titled Radiant Dawn, is indeed a direct sequel to its predecessor, it actually does not rely on your having played the previous game.
